Chelsea donates to earthquake relief

Over $100,000 donated

Posted: 10 September 2010

It is difficult to imagine the impact the recent earthquake has had on the people of Christchurch and the surrounding regions.
Chelsea Sugar is donating over $100,000 to earthquake relief for the region.
We have also donated product to the Salvation Army who are working overtime to meet the demands in the region.

Fortunately our people and facilities in Christchurch have come through largely unscathed.  While everyone is safe and well, some homes and those of their family and friends have suffered damage – in some cases quite severe. On behalf of all of us at Chelsea Sugar I have already conveyed our thoughts and support during this difficult time.

Our warehouse and liquid sugar plant have now been certified as fit for ongoing use by a structural engineer, and we will begin production today.  Returning to normal business activity where possible is an important part of the City itself getting back to normal and will help in restoring the local economy to good health.

As you will be aware many other businesses and homes around the region have not been so fortunate with some being hit very badly.  The impact on their daily lives is no doubt immense, and will continue to be that way for some time to come.

The relief fund is being managed by the New Zealand Red Cross. The Mayor of Christchurch and the Red Cross have vowed that 100% of every donation received by the fund will be spent on those affected by the earthquake.

I would like to specifically recognise our Christchurch based Chelsea people; David Adkins, Jenny Cations and Steven McGregor, as well as the team at our distribution contractors, Drayton Cartage Ltd who are all doing a fantastic job under what can only be described as very difficult conditions.

Thank you to all of you for your efforts; the team is working closely with our customers; some of whom are out of action completely, to ensure they can get back to normal operations as soon as possible.
