Here at Chelsea we are committed to understanding our impact on the environment and looking for ways to not only minimise our environmental impact but to improve our operations so we can be more sustainable.
Our major focuses are on saving energy and water, and reducing the amount of solid waste we produce. Below are examples of what we have done to make a difference:
Saving energy – we upgraded our warehouse roof with clear panels which allow natural light into the area. This means that we don’t have to have our lights on all day – in one year this saves enough energy to power over 40 thousand 60w light bulbs for 12 hours a day!
Saving water – we are always looking for ways to make our processes more water efficient. We were using water for a pump that was then being put into the sewerage, but now we are able to re-use the water from the pump in some of our toilets onsite and for generating steam. No more wasted water!
Reducing solid waste – not only do we have paper and plastic recycling throughout our sites but we also have a worm farm in our cafeteria garden at Chelsea that takes lunch time leftovers from our staff. No more organic waste going to landfill, instead we are making fertiliser and compost for our staff to take home to use on their gardens.
All of our sites hold ISO14001 certification. This is an internationally recognised standard by which environmental management is measured, its main focus is on continual improvement, which is what NZ Sugar constantly strives for.
