Serves
12
1 3/4 cups Edmonds Standard Grade Flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 tsp Edmonds Baking Powder
1 cup Chelsea White Sugar
125g Tararua Butter
2 Tbsp Chelsea Golden Syrup
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups Meadow Fresh Original Milk
2 tsp Edmonds Baking Soda
1 tsp vanilla essence
Icing:
1 1/2 cups Chelsea Icing Sugar
1 Tbsp cocoa powder
50g Tararua Butter, softened
2 Tbsp Water
Preheat oven to 180°C bake. Grease and line a high-sided 20cm round cake tin.
Mix together the Edmonds Standard Grade Flour, cocoa, Edmonds Baking Powder and Chelsea White Sugar.
In separate bowl, melt the Tararua Butter and Chelsea Golden Syrup together (about 1 minute on high in the microwave usually does it).
In another bowl whisk the eggs, then whisk in the Meadow Fresh Original Milk, Edmonds Baking Soda and vanilla. Add both the butter mix and the egg/milk mix to dry ingredients and beat on medium for 1 minute.
Spoon into prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until the top of the cake bounces back when lightly pressed and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool in tin for 10-15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Icing:
Place all icing ingredients in a medium bowl. Beat on low to combine, then increase speed to high and beat until smooth and creamy. Spread onto cooled cake.
I measured ingredients accurately and then added to table spoons of oil to the egg mixture which made the cake moist and tasty too..worked for me and I will use the recipe all the time
I need the American chocolate cake recipe back
On the site please it’s a favourite here. I made this one today. There is an error in the procedure the Cocoa has been left out. I obviously knew where to put it, I’m just letting you know.
I am 11 and i love to bake so I make this all the time. It is delicious. The best chocolate cake ever
Followed recipe came out tasteless and like baking powder -
I EVEN ADDED caramel and vanilla essance 2Tspn and half a cup choc chips - going to try again; as it came out fantastic surrounding consistency (moist and what not) just bland and gross? like no flavour at all - very either soda or baking powdery ????

I read the recipe. My first attempt to bake a cake. The recipe is easy to follow. Will be making it tomorrow. Thank you for the recipe.
Amazing I was searching for something to bake and I saw it it’s amazing it’s quick and easy to bake and I’m only 10 yr so definitely the best cake in the world yummy.
I was looking for a nice easy cake to bake then i came across this.It a great cake to bake for begins, kids or even experienced. It’s great for the school lunch it will last a week as long as you don’t introduce it to the siblings to early because it will be gone bye the next day. This would be a perfect birthday cake and I know my family will all want it for the birthdays its differently a crowd pleaser.I reckon it should be on is it cake or is i fake a Netflix series you could even watch the show Why you gobble down the cake? But one thing I did was had an extra splash of vanilla.
The kids loved it, especially Betty my son although it wasn't gluten free and Betty is gluten free he will have an allergic reaction if he eats gluten but it should be okay.thanks
its super fun to make and the mess isnt even close to what ive made there is pretty much no mess at all if you clean aong the way
We made Fredric with this recipie, even though he fell apart cause I flipped him over on a drying rack. He was a very rich chocolate cake because we used so much icing to put him back together.

I liked this recipe because the cake looks so good! I haven’t tried it yet, but I already love it. It looks like you add chocolate but it’s just cocoa. I have never made a cake before but it is gonna be great.
In my personal opinion, this cake was outstanding in any type of circumstance. To anyone who would love to try out this precious cake, I would highly recommend it to you. Also, I added some toppings to it to give a bit more of that spectacular and fabulous cake. Also, I recommend eating this cake while playing video games, it gave a lot of adrenaline due to the taste. 1000/10
This cake was a 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000/10, I highly recomend it for anyone that is hungry while playing Apex Legends.
super easy to make and clean up from a non experianced baker! havent tasted it but much thicker than other chocolate cakes.
Just like the review's. Awesome I how ever add chocolate chips in the middle of mixture then poured rest on top. My friends like me. Thanks I will only use this recipe.
I followed the recipe exactly, and baked for 60 minutes. And the top was baked but the inside was still batter.
Tried this it was super good 10/10 recommend I put it in the oven for only 40 mins and it was fine but it depends
we haven't done it yet but are very excited to try it the reviews are good so we think it will be moist and tasty =) =)
Wow, Wow, Wow. What a fabulous recipe. It was so wholesome and homey. I felt like a true baker when I was in my kitchen. I put some cherries on top if mine just to add that little extra something. The cake was smooth creamy and all round delicious. 100% would reccomend this to anyone
May I just point out that in this recipe, while you don't have incorrect conversions this time, you missed the cocoa in the method.
Not a Biggie but still...
I’ve doubled the recipe, which was nice and easy, cake has risen well and looks promising. Got lots of students to give a treat to. This is it. They’re young, this is chocolate if they don’t love it I’ve really got something wrong!!
This cake is a huge hit! I have made this recipe like maybe 5 times by now. I can almost memorise this off by heart!
I made this for my friend’s birthday not knowing he would also be bringing a cake so we shared both cakes with the class and everyone seemed to like mine a bit more, I am 13
Yummy, my favourite cake. It came out perfect, I followed the instructions carefully and it was light and fluffy and chocolately. I am 7.
I love this cake I made it with my friend once and I keep making it over and over again it’s so easy to make and I have started a business and using this cake and I am only 12 :D
This is the best cake i've ever made. I have made it so much now its great! I have started making triple tier cakes everyone loves them!
Was the batter supposed to be very thick? im a non baker and dont have an electric mixer so i mixed it myself. By 45 mins the inside of the cake is still gooey. I dont know where I went wrong but hopefully i will nail it next time.
I love this recipe coz i made for my uncle and he said he does not eat cake but went up for seconds. Im 11 and its so easy to make
it's FABULOUS!
I have made it so many times and it's AMAZING every time even just with a sprinkling of icing sugar.
my go-to cake recipe ( also makes amazing cup cakes )
I love this recipe. Just the right amount of processes to keep me interested and not the usual cream butter sugar add egg sep 1 at a time etc. It turned out better and so delicious.
This sis literally the best recipe when it comes to making a quick and easy chocolate cake! I am always using this recipe when I am board or for parties! Thanks so much for yet an other amazing recipie!
This cake is a scrumptious recipe! I made this for my Grandmother's anniversary and dusted it with powdered sugar and rasberries. Thanks Chelsea sugar.
I love this recipe. It's my go to recipe when I make cakes and it's super moist. It's also really easy to make. I definitely recommend this recipe. Thanks a lot Chelsea sugar, you have the best recipes!
I'm 8 and made it with my daddy, I was very surprised by how moist and creamy it was It tasted delicious
I'm 11 and I've made this cake twice by myself. Both times it turned out AMAZING! It's really easy and my mum loves it!!!!!
this recipe works well especially if you want children to bake a cake i highly recommend. :) -10 year old
It was amazing. Except it was a bit chunky in bits, we added more milk and it turned out better then.
I did enjoy it.
this cake is soooo good. my dad owns a cafe and his cafe makes the best yummy cakes. im only 10 and i made this all alone im very proud and so is my dad. my dad said it is almost as good as the cafes cake :D
I really disliked the texture of the cake? It was super grainy, and I've never had any issues with this recipe before????
Everyone I make this cake for raves about it. Yummm I've even made it with soy milk and dairy free spread and it was still delish
I think it was easy to make and tasty
if you are looking for a complex dish then dont make this.
but i liked it
I got mixed up with the baking soda and the baking powder and I put in 1/2 cup such a mess up I I just put icing do better next time, this is prob a good cake
this was the most yum cake i have made but my mum didn't like it so maybe next time she will love............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turned out really well. It's very runny mixture. I thought I put to much milk in at first. I put it in a large loaf pan, then panicked thinking it would overflow, then I realized I had left out the baking powder (ha ha) so that saved the day. It had a nice rise in any case. The texture is perfect and it's so moist. Will be making again, so very easy. Thanks Chelsea.
I’m a non baker but lockdown makes you do crazy things! Cake turned out well. Will definitely make again.
This was such an amazing recipe (the mix and icing). I used this to make 12 muffins and fan baked them.
I highly recommend this recipe :) I used self raising flour so i didn't add baking powder as it's already in self-raising and added a few pinches of baking soda.
Also I had a bit of batter left over and didn't want to waste it so I poured the left over batter into a regular mug cup and microwaved it for 2 mins and 35 secs. Poured a bit of icing on it and it was so good that I only got to eat have a spoon lol (my niece wanted it for herself).
I don’t have microwave so melting butter and syrup in a saucepan be ok
CHELSEA SUGAR: Yes, absolutely :)
It tastes delicious I made it myself and it was easy to make. It was so worth the wait for a delicious tasty chocolate cake. It was a bit hard at the beginning with all the steps also I am age 10. You should really try it!
This is such a great idea for when you're bored. My family as well as me loved it. I would give it a 9.5 /10, you should try it.
This is an amazing recipe and I highly recommend it.
its a very easy tasty recipe and I am 11 and made this cake
without any help.
I love this recipe so much. Thank you a lot it really helped me. It was so easy and quick. Tasted divine.
It's very yummy and tasty. The icing tasted nice and chocolatey but all it needs is chocolate chips in the cake. That's the only thing that I didn't enjoy about it.
Can you leave the cocoa powder out of this? I ran out.
Chelsea Sugar:
Unfortunately, this ingredient cannot be omitted or substituted in this recipe. Perhaps you could bake a vanilla cake.
So delicious easy peasy one of the best recipes I have followed. Moist soft, yummy and just perfect didn't wait for icing was just as yummy. A+++
Nice and easy but I think you may need to dissolve the baking soda in warm milk so it becomes frothy and you won't taste it in the cake.
Just made this cake for my dad but he didn’t get a chance to eat it - all the mokos got there first.
I made this for the first time for my daughters birthday. I could taste the baking soda so next time I make it I will put less in.
This is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had. I took a slice to school once and gave a bit to my friends and within minutes I had five orders for cake for their birthdays. This is an easy cake to make and is always delicious. 10/10 incredible.
it looks so yummy and i want to make alot of chocolate c ake because of your delious hocolate cake it is so spectacular cake Chelsea
Yummy cake, so light and fluffy. Made it in a rectangle cake tin so not so big, cut up un-iced and put in the freezer. Also great heated in the microwave with some chocolate sauce and icecream.
This is not, I stress, NOT a recipe for a 20 cm cake tin. It's for a 23 cm tin, so please CHANGE the recipe to reflect this. I have a very messy oven with chocolate cake flowing to the bottom thanks to your misdirection.
I understand that members' recipes are not tested; so I specially chose a Chelsea Sugar recipe for reliability. You have let me down badly, Chelsea.
Lovely & moist just as a chocolate cake should be. The ones who said different obviously didn't follow the recipe.
Cake itself tasted bland and dry. Not too exciting, not sure what I've done wrong, especially given the comments and I tend to follow recipes to the T.
Delicious and scrumptious. I loved the cake it was nice and chocolatey and moist, but it was a little bit dry.
This is one of the most moist flavorful recipes for chocolate cake I've made.
It's great with chocolate buttercream or fresh cream and walnuts. I used this recipe on the weekend for a 50th birthday cake and I added half a can of beetroot juice (from canned beetroot). You can't taste it but it does enhance the chocolate flavor.
I think its an amazing recipe you should share more chocolate cake recipes because I'm doing exploration to learn about my passion thanks for sharing the chocolate cake recipe (:
This cake is amazing, it’s delicious. Quick and easy. At first you think that you have done something wrong with the batter because its very wet. But it's fine after getting baked.
Amazing cake recipe!
Hi. I thought this was a good recipe and a comment that I had to make is that it didn't take an hour to bake but then I might have used a different tin to what you guys have used but I thought that I would just say that. Overall it's a good recipe and people ate it quickly. Definitely recommend it ☺
Not sure what went wrong but I followed recipe and it was a horrible heavy tasting cake definitely won't be making this again yuk
I baked this cake for my mum and she loved it soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much
thanks so much its so easy
After many years of successfully baking gluten free I was recently in need of a gluten flour cake. I made this cake and it was amazing. It was just as good a few days later too.
It was so easy to make it was my first ever chocolate cake i used self raising flour for this one and was awesome. I will be using this recipe once again................:D
is there chocolate icing to go with it?
CHELSEA: thanks for the feedback. We've added a chocolate icing recipe. Enjoy!
Perfect recipe for muffins as well. Took 20 minutes in the oven. Came out light and moist, so easy to make.
