Chelsea Sugar: more kiwi than kiwifruit
Back before New Zealand had the All Blacks, kiwifruit, Buzzy Bees or bungee, we had Chelsea Sugar.
Nestled amongst bush on the edge of Auckland’s North Shore, our sugar refinery has been supplying top quality products to kiwi homes and businesses since 1884. Generations of New Zealanders have grown up with the taste of Chelsea and the iconic pink packets in their pantries.
A bit about our business:
Chelsea Sugar has been in kiwi home baking recipes for more than a century, but the quality of our products means we also supply New Zealand’s food service industry and export to all over Asia Pacific.
We start with raw sugar cane shipped right to the refinery door from Queensland in Australia. And we get a lot of it – around 27,000 tonnes every six weeks, which is enough to cover the whole of New Zealand. From there it’s refined and packed into the range of Chelsea products you see on the supermarket shelf.
Our 250 staff work across two sites – our blending plant in Glenfield, North Shore and in our famous pink refinery on the banks of the Waitemata Harbour. Click here to take a virtual tour of the refinery.
