An old favourite... the number one trick is having enough butter and water for the perfect topping. Thank you for this recipe.
Place fruit in a well-greased oven-safe dish (approximately 23-25cm diameter for a round dish). Sprinkle with Chelsea Caster Sugar and mixed spice, and pour water over the top.
Place all of the topping ingredients in a food processor and process until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Alternatively, mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl and rub butter in with your fingertips.
Sprinkle crumble topping over the fruit. Bake for 45 - 50 minutes, until topping is golden and fruit is tender.
Serve warm with whipped cream or ice-cream.
Variations: Try mixing apples with other fruit such as pears. Add raisins or sultanas for some extra flavour.
